Vera Baker Williams (Janu – Octo) was an American children's writer and illustrator. Her best known work, A Chair for My Mother, has won multiple awards and was featured on the children's television show Reading Rainbow. At Black Mountain, Vera met Paul Williams whom she married. Throughout her life, Ms. Williams always enjoyed the outdoors – including hiking, camping, planting and—later— canoeing. She even canoed miles on the Yukon, a trip that inspired her book “Three Days on the River in a Red Canoe.”.
