Nzinga received military and political training as a child, and she demonstrated an aptitude for defusing political crises as an ambassador to the Portuguese Empire. In , she assumed power over Ndongo after the death of her brother Mbandi. Nzinga (born c. , Ndongo [now in Angola]—died Decem, Matamba [now in Angola]) was the queen of the Mbundu kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba during the 17th century in what is now Angola in sub-Saharan Africa. Born into the Ndongo royal family in , Ana Nzinga trained as a warrior, fighting alongside her father, Ngola Mbande Kiluanji, the King of Ndongo. Her life coincided with increased encroachment by the Portuguese Empire and the development of the slave trade along the Central African coast.
