After graduating from Gettysburg College in , he earned his Masters of Arts from Johns Hopkins University. Spinelli spent nearly twenty years writing novels after graduating college. In , he married Eileen Mesi Spinelli. In , his first book, Space Station Seventh Grade, was published.
