David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary, doctor, abolitionist, and explorer who lived in the s. He sought to bring Christianity, commerce, and “civilization” to Africa and undertook three extensive expeditions throughout much of the continent. David was employed at the age of ten in the cotton mill of Henry Monteith & Co. in Blantyre Works. He and his brother John worked hour days as piecers, tying broken cotton threads on the spinning machines.
